Chiropractic for Sports

If you’re not being checked regularly by a chiropractor, you may be neglecting muscle imbalances as well as joint misalignment. Most athletes have some joints that are either not in optimal alignment or are not achieving full range of motion. The extra forces and strains that athletes toll on their bodies make them especially prone to issues in the extremities (arms & legs). More often than not, many of us are completely unaware that they are going through their life with minor joint misalignment because we become used to feeling that way, so it seems normal. The problem is that a minor issue involving the articulations in the bones of your ankle can cause global changes in athletic performance. For example, a small bone out of place in the ankle can cause the legs and then hips to rotate out of natural alignment during walking/running and lead to painful issues like muscle imbalances.

Athletes that we’ve treated have reported increased accuracy and coordination following their adjustment. This is due to the removal of interference between the brain and the fine tuned muscles of the hand. Whether small misalignment are present in the wrist or larger issues are present in the neck, they will all cause interference with the nervous system. One major disadvantage for an athlete with nervous system interference is a dysfunction of Proprioception. Propricetion is the sensation of where in space your brain thinks that you hands are located based on what the body tells the mind. These proprioceptive information signals communicate between the brain and every part of your body via the nervous system. When bones are out of place the nervous system sends misfired signals to and from the brain which can affect a skilled athlete’s hand eye coordination causing them to be less precise, less accurate and less efficient. If this information is skewed and an athlete’s sense of their body in space is off by just a few millimeters there will be significant reduction in precision of their bodily movements. That is why regular chiropractic care can lead to incredible improvements in athletic performance. Every athlete can benefit from a chiropractic sports tune up.
